Telepresence
is defined as the experience of being fully present at a live real
world location remote from one's own physical location. The Quilt
uses the term telepresence in the broadest sense referring to
technology that provides open virtual presence capabilities.
As telepresence technology
is becoming more widely adopted, the research and education community is
interested in benefiting from the deployment of this technology for their
students, faculty and researchers. The goal of The Quilt’s Telepresence Working
Group is to educate its members on all facets of this new technology including
an understanding of the underlying technology, overview of current telepresence
service options, and the exchange of information and experiences in the
procurement and deployment of telepresence systems on regional R&E networks. As
such, the group will collect and disseminate information related to telepresence
that will allow Quilt members to make informed choices with respect to their
telepresence service options. Specifically, the working group aims to:
-
identify common standards and best practices
to integrate telepresense capabilities into the regional and campus networks
-
collaborate with Internet2 and NLR to test and
operationalize an open virtual presence capability across the R&E space
-
provide a forum for
regional networks to exchange information with peers on telepresence
technology from administrative to financial to technical
-
identify, and report
on, telepresence projects and activities relevant to the R&E community
-
collect and report on
telepresence-related data from The Quilt membership
