The Quilt's 2006 Fall Workshops

The
Quilt is holding two workshops in St. Louis this fall as adjunct events to
the NANOG meeting in St. Louis the same week. By holding
these workshops adjacent to NANOG38, The Quilt
hopes its workshop participants will have the
opportunity to participate in the technical and operational
dialogue of the NANOG sessions which will
cover the latest technical issues facing
the network
operator community.

Peering Workshop
October
11-12, 2006
The Quilt will host its first Peering Workshop October 11-12, 2006. The
focus of this workshop will be to educate Quilt members and Quilt member
participants on the different facets of peering and provide updates on the
current state of national R&E peering efforts. It will begin with a basic
overview on the topic and then dive deeper into the technical,
administrative and financial aspects of peering. This discussion will be
followed by updates on national R&E network commercial/commodity peering
strategies and how to leverage these strategies to benefit the R&E
community. The Quilt has distributed a comprehensive peering survey to its
members and affiliates. Results of the survey will be presented at the
workshop and will be made available on-line to Quilt members. This session
will end with a transition topic of current optical peering/bilateral
exchange projects which will lead into the topics of the Fiber Workshop.
Fiber Workshop
October 12-13, 2006
The Quilt, will be hosting its fifth Fiber Workshop
October 12-13, 2006. This
workshop is a continuation of the series of workshops The
Quilt has offered on topics associated with building,
managing and connecting to a Metro or Regional Optical
Networking (RON) Infrastructure. The agenda for this
workshop will begin after lunch on October 12, 2006 with a
discussion on the various service delivery options available
for RON’s to provide connectivity to campuses. The
remaining portion of the workshop will include a
panel discussion on Common RON Business Models as well as
the topics of GigaPoP reliability and capacity planning at
Layers 1 and 2.
