Each will share overviews of their current initiatives in managing and supporting our country’s international R&E exchange points providing details on network infrastructure, partnerships, and new opportunities and challenges in supporting international scientific collaborations.

Quilt Member Panel Discussion: Broadband Opportunities in Rural Areas – What is the Role of Your Regional Network?

Regional networks in their role as trusted conveners and partners in their areas are often called on by rural communities and representatives for assistance in connecting difficult to reach community anchor institutions in rural areas. This panel will explore how Quilt members consider opportunities to bring broadband to geographically challenged areas of their states and define their roles in these types of initiatives.

Invited Panel Presentation: Diversity Efforts and the WINS Project Invited Panel Presentation: Diversity Efforts and the WINS Project

The IT field faces a diversity problem including building its next generation of leaders. Through the NSF-funded Women in IT Networking at SC (WINS) program, five scholarship recipients participated in the ground-up construction of SCinet at last fall’s SC15. This panel will share how WINS represents just one small step towards solving a larger problem around cultivating and preparing the next generation of female engineering talent.

A Tour and Introduction to Calit2 – Inventing the Collaborative Research Environment for the Digital Future

Quilt members and other conference participants will have an opportunity to hear from Calit2 leaders, including Calit2 Founder and Director Larry Smarr, about current research in areas above and will tour and experience some of the new environments that support this research.   Professor Smarr and CENIC CEO Louis Fox will discuss the groundbreaking potential of the Pacific Research Platform – a new National Science Foundation grant that uses fiber-optic networks to connect researchers at universities throughout the West Coast, enabling them to share “big data” at an unprecedented speed.   This discussion will underscore opportunities for Quilt members, and the research institutions that comprise their communities, to participate.

The Quilt and its members advocated strongly for the inclusion of building dark fiber as an option in the refreshed E-Rate program proceeding.   Learn from this panel of Quilt members about how they are positioning their organizations and supporting members to explore this funding option in the next 2016 E-Rate cycle.
