The Quilt recognizes Ron Hutchins with top technology honor

Technology leaders throughout United States celebrate the distinguished service of IT innovator

HARTFORD, Conn. and SEATTLE, Wash. (Sept. 18, 2024)The Quilt, a consortium of regional Research and Education (R&E) networks throughout the United States, today announced at their annual Fall Member Meeting that Ron Hutchins is this year’s recipient of the Dave Reese Distinguished Service Award.

This esteemed award is named in honor of Dave Reese (1958-2019), a founding member of The Quilt who served in several leadership roles for the organization including chairman of the board and treasurer. He set the bar high with his extraordinary sense of community, and this award recognizes others who have shown the same level of leadership, support and service to The Quilt and the national R&E networking community.

“As one of the original founders, Ron has been a constant contributor and humble leader in our community for more than 40 years and this award recognizes his long-standing and exemplary commitment to the diverse set of organizations that make up The Quilt,” said Jen Leasure, president and CEO of The Quilt. “Ron’s work is far-reaching and has had a profound and lasting effect on the success of so many. His advocacy for The Quilt has been the bedrock of what we are today and is well-deserving of this recognition.”

Hutchins distinguished career has provided leadership, service, and support to The Quilt and the national R&E networking community as a whole (even serving on The Quilt Executive Committee). He is a recognized leader in the technology industry and is often sought out for his technical leadership, vision and collaborative sprit. He currently serves as CIO of GoldenStateNet, where he is engaged in bridging the digital divide and to create digital equity for all in California. Additional achievements include serving in leadership roles at Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Virginia, Southeast Universities Research Association Network (SURANet), the Southern Crossroads (SoX), and Internet2. From the onset of his career to his current position, he has been a driving force and champion for innovation and collaboration in information technology.

Hutchins received this recognition in Hartford this week during The Quilt 2024 Fall Member Meeting. He joins an esteemed list of IT innovators who have received this award over the years including Wendy Huntoon (2023), Jim Stewart (2022), and Marla Meehl (2021).
