The Quilt / InCommon Federation Workshop
La Jolla, California
February 6&7, 2014
Workshop Summary and Next Steps (PDF)
A one-day, no-fee workshop designed to develop a new distributed framework for federation that would extend InCommon Federation Services to K-12 (and potentially other CAIs) in collaboration with regional networks. The aim was to have substantive discussions in La Jolla, develop a set of shared action items, and form a team that will continue the effort beyond the workshop.
The meeting offered technical and business discussion tracks. Technical goals included identifying and documenting future InCommon service and data models and tools for federation support and delegated metadata management that scale to accommodate K-12. Business and administrative goals included outlining what administrative, support, and technical responsibilities could be shared and the opportunity for new cost models. Goals following the workshop included identifying pilot projects for testing new federation models as well as establishing a new InCommon federation working group among regional networks.
Webinars:
The first webinar was held on Friday, January 18th and provided an Introduction to Federations and InCommon. The webinar introduced some of the basic concepts and terminology associated with components of Identity management and federations for those who may not have had much background or exposure to approaches that have been applied in the Identity domain.
The archive of the first hour-long webinar “Introduction to Federations and InCommon” is now available at http://internet2.adobeconnect.com/p11m4xxrh11
Webinar 1 (PDF)
The second webinar was held on Friday, January 25th and provided a more in-depth overview of some models and strategies for establishing a distributed framework for federation that would allow for the extensibility of InCommon services to constituents such as K-12 and community colleges in collaboration with regional networks. Other goals of the second webinar were to prepare attendees to come to the workshop with information about their constituent’s needs, readiness, and level of expertise as well as potential Regional/K-12 pilot project opportunities.
